Design as a manipulative device

In the present day where commercial marketplace dictates the most prominent use of design, it can exploit the role of design to impose an ideology that embodies the products. This sealed publication seeks to expose the manipulative role of design in the commercial marketplace.
This publication serves two purposes. Firstly, the die cut circles of pictures from magazines at the beginning reveals the manipulation of advertisements gradually.  The images were arranged in the order of everyday ‘pretty’ advertisement pictures to advertisement pictures that can send out disdainful concealed messages. Following the content, the paper choice employed is also glossy and thin paper stock, frequently used for magazines.
On the flipside of the book, the content reveals how the role of design in the commercial marketplace can manipulative and cause potential repercussions. The layouts were photocopied onto a matt recycled paper, as the tonality of the content is heavier and serious.

The play in layouts, paper stock, content in one book seeks to have the reader experience a stark contrast between both contents in a single publication. Our skills as designers are prominently employed in product marketing /commercial marketplace to make people buy things that they do not need. Therefore this project seeks to provoke the issues of social consciousness in the design practice to reflect upon the functions they serve.
